HUFS Jean Monnet EU Centre and Chonnam National University Eurasia Institute Host Joint Seminar and MOU Signing Ceremony
– Joint Academic Event Held under the Theme: “Changes and Strategic Responses of Europe in Transition”
– MOUs Signed to Expand and Strengthen Research Cooperation Networks in European and Eurasian Studies
On June 18, 2026, the Jean Monnet EU Centre at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), led by Director Bongchul Kim, co-hosted a joint academic seminar titled “Changes and Strategic Responses of Europe in Transition” alongside the Eurasia Humanistic Convergence Research Institute at Chonnam National University (CNU). The event took place at the Faculty Seminar Room in the College of Humanities at Chonnam National University.
Co-organized by the HUFS Jean Monnet EU Centre, the HUFS Institute of EU Studies, the CNU Eurasia Humanistic Convergence Research Institute, EURAXESS KOREA, and SIGA, and sponsored by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), the seminar was organized to analyze the rapidly evolving political, economic, and security landscapes in Europe and to explore strategic policy directions for South Korea.
Prior to the academic sessions, an official MOU signing ceremony was held. The CNU Eurasia Humanistic Convergence Research Institute signed mutual agreements with both the HUFS Jean Monnet EU Centre and the HUFS Institute of EU Studies. Through these partnerships, the institutes committed to expanding the horizons of European and Eurasian regional studies while building a robust network for future academic exchanges and joint research initiatives.
The subsequent presentation sessions covered a wide range of current social and infrastructural issues in Europe, including Germany＇s full-day school childcare policies, a comparative analysis of energy transition policies between Korea and Germany, and hybrid threats emerging from the Arctic region. Participants also examined the shifting international norm-based order following the Russia-Ukraine war, analyzing the shifting security doctrines of key European nations such as Germany and France, while offering in-depth insights into the future of Korea-EU cooperation.
Following the presentations, participating scholars gathered for a comprehensive roundtable discussion. The experts engaged in an active exchange of views regarding the implications of a transitioning Europe on both the Korean Peninsula and the global community.
“This seminar provided a timely opportunity to comprehensively grasp the strategic maneuvers of major European nations amid the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war and global supply chain disruptions,” stated Prof. Bongchul Kim, Director of the HUFS Jean Monnet EU Centre. “With the signing of these MOUs, we look forward to a fruitful collaboration with Chonnam National University＇s Eurasia Institute that will significantly contribute to the advancement of European studies in Korea.”
