The Jean Monnet EU Centre at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and EURAXESS Korea jointly hosted the Expert Forum on Building the Korea–EU Science and Technology Ecosystem on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. in the 80th Anniversary Memorial Hall of Kwangwoon University.
The forum opened with welcoming remarks by Tomasz Wierzbowski, Representative of EURAXESS Korea. Emphasizing the importance of Korea–EU cooperation in science and technology, he noted that expanding researcher exchanges and establishing a foundation for joint research would play a key role in enhancing the innovation capacity of both regions.
The subsequent sessions brought together experts from a variety of fields, including artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, healthcare networks, and the sports industry, who discussed European research cases and their potential applications in Korea.
Professor Taejeong Park (Duksung Women’s University) explained the development trajectory of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the technological transition leading to ChatGPT, while examining key issues surrounding the relationship between artificial intelligence and human intelligence.
Professor Hyunju Song (Soongsil University) analyzed inter-hospital networks based on patient transfer data for stroke patients and provided insights into the future direction of data-driven healthcare delivery systems.
Professor Donghwa Shin (Kwangwoon University) introduced recent developments in Origin–Destination (OD) data visualization technologies based on case studies from European research institutions and demonstrated their potential applications in transportation, logistics, and population mobility analysis.
Miran Noh, CEO of AtoZ Sports, reviewed European research and development (R&D) cases utilizing sports data and presented a regional growth model that integrates sports, health, and tourism as a possible alternative for sustainable development.
In addition, Hayan Lee, Associate Director of the HUFS Jean Monnet EU Centre, highlighted the significance of academic and regional cooperation between Korea and the European Union and offered perspectives on future directions for collaboration based on European experiences.
The forum provided an opportunity to identify practical points of convergence in Korea–EU science and technology cooperation through discussions spanning multiple disciplines. By sharing examples of data-driven research and industrial applications, the event offered valuable implications for expanding joint research initiatives and fostering regional innovation ecosystems in the future.
